SOS Children's Village Karachi was opened in 1987 and comprises of 15 family homes and other essential facilities. It is situated on a seven-acre site in Malir, donated by the Government of Sindh.
Karachi is the largest city, main seaport and financial centre of Pakistan, and the capital of the province of Sindh. With an estimated population of about 18 million, Karachi is one of the world's largest cities in terms of population. It is Pakistan's premier centre of banking, industry and trade.
Education is a high priority
The children in SOS Children’s Village Karachi lead busy lives and, besides many extra-curricular activities, are provided with assistance in their studies. As in all Villages, emphasis is laid on academic ambition, as it is important that the children realise their full potential.
The SOS school and college accommodate over 1500 students. The results of the Board examinations are excellent and the school has been upgraded to intermediate level, offering subjects leading to professional courses. This institution has made a big impact on the existing educational standards and is recognised as one of the best in the area.
The SOS youth home is located in about 15 minutes’ drive from SOS Children’s Village Karachi. The construction was possible due to a generous donor providing the land, and others making the construction possible. The boys benefit from the provision of good facilities while attending school and training in different organisations. They also have an active scouting programme especially the one organised by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in which the SOS children take a keen interest.
Another addition to the facilities available in Karachi is the SOS Technical Training Institute based in Korangi. All the workshops are operational, with the automobile workshop being especially popular. It has a capacity to train 1200 students every year who can benefit from the vocational training on offer. Courses are structured for both boys and girls and will go a long way towards ensuring job eligibility for the young people who participate in the training programmes.
Free medical treatment for the community
The SOS Medical Centre for Women and Children is situated within the Village and offers free treatment to the community. A doctor is available here on a daily basis, and the number of patients examined and treated has now reached almost 5000 per year.
